Thirteen years of science, research, service, and national impact.

On 1 Jan 2026, the National Centre for Earth Science Studies (NCESS) proudly celebrated its 13th Foundation Day, marking over a decade of excellence in Earth science research, national service, and scientific innovation.

The highlight of the day was the Foundation Day Lecture by Prof. Ashok Sahni, Professor Emeritus, Panjab University, Chandigarh, titled "The Skeletons in Nature's Cupboard: A Biomechanical Approach to Creativity" - a thought-provoking exploration that seamlessly connected science, imagination, and innovation.

Welcoming the gathering, Prof. N. V. Chalapathi Rao, Director, NCESS, reflected on the Centre's scientific milestones and reaffirmed its commitment to national R&D priorities aligned with the vision of a resilient and sustainable Viksit Bharat 2047, under the aegis of the Ministry of Earth Sciences Government of India (MoES).

Awards across various categories were also presented, celebrating excellence and dedication within the NCESS community.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr J. K. Tomson, Scientist E & Group Head, NCESS.

A captivating new study from the National Centre for Earth Science Studies (NCESS) sheds light on anomalous structures hidden beneath the Indian Ocean. Our Scientists used seismic waves to build a comprehensive 3D shear-wave velocity model of the oceanic lithosphere-asthenosphere system, uncovering subsurface ridges, tectonic features, and concealed layers across the region. उन्होंने "गुजरात (2001 भुज) भूकंप: वैज्ञानिक तथ्य और भूकंपोत्तर पुनर्निर्माण कार्यक्रम" विषय पर एक सारगर्भित व्याख्यान प्रस्तुत किया, जिसमें भूकंप से जुड़े वैज्ञानिक पहलुओं तथा पुनर्निर्माण कार्यो के अनुभव साझा किए गए।
