Palaeomagnetism Laboratory
The Palaeomagnetism Laboratory (PML) was formed by Dr. T. Radhakrishna (former Scientist-G and Group Head, Crustal Processes Group) in 1987 with strong motivation and support from Dr. Harsh K Gupta (former director, CESS) and B. P. Radhakrishna (former president of the Geological Society of India and the Executive Committee Member of the CESS). At the beginning the PML equipment's was acquired with full financial assistance from grants of the Department of Science and Technology and later from the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India. The present PML has both advanced and portable instruments for palaeomagnetic and rock magnetic studies and is equipped with a dual speed spinner magnetometer (JR-6 AGICO Czech) with sensitivity range of 2.4 x 10-6 A/m, DTech2000 AF Demagnetiser with maximum peak field up to 200 mT, and also have eight different discrete rates (ASC scientific; USA), Thermal demagnetiser; MMTD1 (Magnetic measurements, UK), susceptibility meter, Bartington MS2WFP Temperature-Susceptibility system and impulse magnetizer in order to measure natural remanent magnetizations, demagnetization treatments and magnetic properties of rocks. The PML is also equipped, for field collection of samples, with two Pomeroy gasoline drills (ASC scientific; USA), diamond drill bits, oriented device, pump can for water cooling, Brunton compass and other accessories. Laboratory drilling Unit (Bharat Diamond works Ltd; Bombay) is also available for drilling and preparing specimens for palaeomagnetic study.
