NCESS is situated in a tranquil and serene location amidst greenery and the placid Akkulam back waters in the city of Thiruvananthapuram, also known as Trivandrum, the capital of the state of Kerala. Thiruvananthapuram is the political nerve centre and a Research and Development hub. It is an abode to a cluster of research centres, the most prominent ones being the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Technopark, the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), the Indian Institute of Science, Education and Research (IISER), Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB), Sree Chitra Thirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) and our own National Centre for Earth Science Studies (NCESS).
The city is well-connected to all the major cities of India by road, rail and air.
By Road: The nearest bus stop on the national highway NH-47 is at Ulloor, which is 2 km from NCESS. The central bus terminal is the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) Bus Station, just opposite to the Trivandrum Central railway station, Thampanoor, about 10 kms from NCESS. Major cities of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka are linked to Trivandrum by state-run and private bus services. Taxis and auto rickshaws are available outside the station and at all places for commuting.
By Rail: There are three railway stations within the city limits including the Thiruvananthapuram central station. The Central railway station is located at Thampanoor in the heart of the city, 10 km from the NCESS. Kochuveli railway station is about 6 km from NCESS.
By Air: NCESS is about 8 kms from Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. Several direct flights from the Middle East, Singapore, Maldives, Malaysia and Sri Lanka connect the city to the world and several domestic airlines like Indian Airlines, Jet Airways, King Fisher, Air Sahara etc to the rest of the country. Pre-paid taxis and auto rickshaws are available at the airport.
