Brainstorming Workshop on "Critical Zone Studies for Sustainable Development: Focus on Indian Critical Zone Observatories" - 27 & 28 May, 2024

The two-day Brainstorming Workshop on ‘Critical Zone Studies for Sustainable Development: Focus on Indian Critical Zone Observatories’ was inaugurated today by Prof N.V.Chalapathi Rao, Director, NCESS. This workshop aims to facilitate discussion between multidisciplinary experts from India and France on charting future directions for Indian Critical Zone Observatories. The Workshop concluded on 28th May 2024 with a valedictory function presided over by the Director, NCESS. The brainstorming workshop deliberated the status and future of Critical Zone initiatives and its importance for the sustainable development of India. The discussions, led by fifteen experts from different fields of Earth Sciences from India and France, focused on the current Critical Zone research in India and stressed the need for setting up an adequate number of CZOs in different agro-climatic regions of the country.

The station is located 5 km westwards of Anamudi (2695 m), the highest peak in the Western Ghats.

In continuation with National Centre for Earth Science Studies, Ministry of Earth Sciences Government of India Outreach Program in Wayanad, Kerala, Scientists of NCESS, along with the committed social workers and ST Promoter, visited the Mathol Tribal Colony in the 20th Ward of Panamaram Gram Panchayat on February 22, 2024. Situated in the river basin of the Panamaram River, a tributary of the Kabani River, the colony faces the constant threat of floods and experiences severe drought and water scarcity in summer.
